About Spencer Slishman

I am a filmmaker and photographer from Boston, Massachusetts currently based out of Los Angeles. In 2016, I graduated with a BFA in film & tv production from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

My work revolves around contrasts of identity, self to surroundings, self to community, or self to self. I like to explore characters that are searching for a missing authenticity in their lives and because of this, they isolate themselves from their community and must find their way back (or not). All said, I believe that there is beauty in all parts of life, be it a moment, an emotion, or a setting.

These themes are exemplified in my short film Strange Paradise which deals with six characters all staying in the same downtown Boston hotel who are trying to escape loneliness in their own ways. This film was a part of the Santa Monica International film festival, and continues on in the festival circuit. My first feature screenplay, Sharing Needles, about the opioid epidemic in Boston is another great example of my thematic tendencies. Sharing Needles advanced to the quarterfinals in the Nicholls screenwriting competition and received a high score on The Blacklist.

In congruence with my filmmaking, I am a photographer. I shoot both fashion and street photography and enjoy the challenge of single frame expression and storytelling. I shoot on film as much as possible because there’s truly nothing more satisfying, aesthetic, or authentic than a freshly developed roll of celluloid.
